Kennel Club Competitive Obedience could be just the thing for you and your dog try:

Kennel Club Competitive Obedience at the entry level involves training your dog to:
  • Walk closely to heel in an animated, attentive and happy manner
  • 'Recall' (come when called) from a sit, then when called, to run to you and sit straight in front of you​
As you progress up the class levels, other exercises are included in the various higher stages:
  • 'Retrieve' (dumbbell at lower levels then various articles chosen by judge in higher classes)
  • 'A Recall' - Recall to your side whilst you are walking
  • 'Scent' - Dog to search for, find and retrieve a scented cloth
  • 'Sendaway' - Dog runs to a marked area and lays down
  • 'Changes of Pace in Heelwork' - Slow and Fast pace (lower classes are all at normal pace)
  • 'Distant Control (ASSD)' - Dog has to assume a set pattern of positions (sit, down, stand) in varying orders at distance
  • 'Positions On the Move' - Dog has to assume the Sit, Down & Stand during moving heelwork
There are various all day shows across the UK most weekends
​where you compete against others at the same training level
 There are 8 levels to work up through which are: 
​Introductory, Pre-Beginner, Beginner, Novice, Class A, Class B, Class C and Championship C

  • ​I have had dogs all my life and have been competing at Kennel Club Obedience Shows for many years.
  • I currently compete with two rescue collies, who are just starting to work their way up the class levels 
  • I have had 7 dogs qualified to compete at the highest possible Championship C level (3 being rescue dogs), all being regularly placed and one becoming a coveted Obedience Champion (Reesa - who can be seen in the video below competing at Crufts) 
  • I have competed in the Crufts Obedience Championships in Birmingham on several occasions.  
  • A video showing Reesa competing at Crufts is below - remember this shows the very highest level of performance needed, lower classes have a small fraction of the heelwork shown here and none of the other exercises shown in the video.

To date every dog I have had training with me on a regular basis
has gone on to ​win Kennel Club classes
including 6 winning up into the highest Championship C level
& gaining places in that level
with 2 winning at that class and going on to compete in the
Crufts Obedience Championships (Birmingham)
The many breeds I have had come to me for Competition training include
​Weimaraners, Dobermans, Greyhounds, German Shepherds, Briards, Beagles,
Flat Coated Retrievers, Standard Poodles, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers,
many Crossbreeds (including tiny dogs), Corgi's, Jack Russell types
​and many Border Collies and Working Sheepdogs
Several have reached Open C standard including Championship C level (winning at the highest level)

  • I offer Competitive Obedience Training to anyone who would like to extend their dogs training. 
  • Any breed of dog can learn to do competition style training and they can start at any age (the younger the better!).
  • My training is totally reward based 'clicker type' methods, high rewarding to motivate and allow your dog to really enjoy the various elements involved.  
  • Food and toys are used.  I teach the hand touch/hand follow methods.  
  • Everything is geared around the dog being motivated to enjoy obedience.  
  • Training is tailored to individual dog/owner requirements. 
  • It can take a year or so to train your dog up to competition standard, but each dog is different.
  • Initial training is One to One until a basic understanding is developed and then group sessions can be offered.

One to One training is local to East Grinstead or Forest Row with 1 hour appointments at mutually convenient times
Two hour group sessions are in Forest Row (East Sussex which borders West Sussex):
Group Classes during Summer:  Tuesday evenings outdoors (Forest Row, East Sussex)
Group Classes during Winter:  Sunday afternoons (Forest Row, East Sussex)  
As you move up the classes other exercises are involved (click on the 'buttons' for more information)
